Fading Strokes: Rang-e-Naza Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage has been fueled by a variety of traditional artistic art forms such as truck art, Sufi poster art, cinema billboard art etc. Hand painted cinema billboards of yester years are one of the icons of Pakistan’s entertainment industry and street culture. Its roots are buried deep in our history dating back to the Mughal era. Although for decades these billboards have ornamented Pakistan’s city life, their days are now numbered largely due to the decline of the local movie industry and the panaflex invasion.
Rang-e-Naza is a film that celebrates and narrates the story of this very important icon of Pakistan’s cultural identity- hand painted cinema billboards. The film brings us close to the hay day of Pakistani cinema and gigantic hand painted billboards used to promote them and takes a closer look at the artists and craftsmen who are behind these creations. It brings us forward to the present day when this art has all but disappeared and the artists are fighting this losing battle to keep it all alive.
